Plug-in solar panels now legal in Great Britain
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has opened a new, lower-cost route into home solar, with plug-in panels now legal to buy and use across Great Britain from 27 August 2026. For households watching every direct debit, the headline number is simple: the government says a compliant kit could trim as much as £110 a year from electricity bills, or a little over £9 a month. That will not transform a family budget on its own, but it is still meaningful in a market where smaller savings are driving real buying decisions. According to DESNZ, each kit can generate up to 800W and cover as much as 20% of an average home's electricity use when conditions are favourable. In practical terms, that is enough to support everyday appliances such as a fridge, television, Wi-Fi router, laptop, phone charger and an Xbox S while the sun is out. The attraction is the lower barrier to entry. Unlike a full rooftop system, plug-in solar does not come with an installation bill, so the upfront decision is easier for households that want some control over energy costs without committing to a major refit. It is best seen as a daytime top-up rather than a full-house solution, but that lighter commitment is exactly what could widen adoption.
Retail is central to the story. Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, Amazon, Argos and Wickes have all been named as stockists or future sellers, while British Gas has also backed the category. That matters because visibility through familiar high-street and online brands tends to do more for consumer confidence than a policy announcement on its own. From a business perspective, this gives retailers a new product line tied directly to cost-of-living pressure, home energy demand and the steady consumer move towards small-scale electrification. It also gives energy suppliers another route into the home, especially if first-time buyers of plug-in solar later consider batteries, time-of-use tariffs or larger solar systems.
The government says the legal change follows independent safety testing and that the UK specification is tougher than Germany's, where similar devices are already widely used. DESNZ points to roughly half a million new units being plugged in there last year, offering a useful guide to what a normalised market can look like once consumers understand the product. Even so, legal sale does not mean every property can move immediately. Energy Saving Trust guidance makes clear that some households will need permission before buying or fitting a device, particularly renters, leaseholders, balcony users and owners of listed buildings. Some homes may also need planning consent or approval from a landlord, freeholder or building owner, which means the market is broad but not friction-free.
The timing is not accidental. MCS figures cited by the government show almost 150,000 certified solar installations in the first six months of 2026, up 17% on the previous best start to a year in 2025. Battery installations are also rising fast, with 36,000 certified systems in the same period, almost double the level seen a year earlier. Those numbers suggest plug-in solar is arriving into an audience that is already interested in self-generation. What has been missing for many flats, smaller homes and lower-budget households is a simpler product at a lower starting cost. On the government's own figures, standard rooftop solar can save homeowners up to £480 a year, so plug-in panels sit below that on savings but above it on accessibility.
Ministers are also presenting the move as part of a broader cost-of-living offer. The announcement follows July plans to cut VAT on energy bills, alongside the previously announced £150 taken off bills in last year's Budget and the expansion of the £150 Warm Home Discount to around six million households. That framing is politically useful, but households will still want to do the maths carefully. Savings will vary by panel placement, daylight hours, time spent at home and any permissions required. For some buyers, plug-in solar will be a sensible add-on; for others, the payback period may feel slower once the retail price is set against real-world rather than headline savings.
For the energy sector, this is less about one product launch and more about how domestic generation is becoming ordinary. Solar Energy UK, the Renewable Energy Association and the Energy Networks Association all see plug-in kits as a way to bring more small-scale generation into more homes, while keeping safety and registration rules intact. The near-term test is straightforward: price, trust and convenience. If retailers keep compliant kits visible and affordable, and if landlords, freeholders and councils take a practical view on permissions, plug-in solar could find a solid audience this winter. For consumers, it offers modest but tangible bill relief. For retailers and suppliers, it marks the start of a more mainstream market in low-cost home energy tech.
